Products
There are quite a vast and extensive variety of products that are available for the completion of a new roof for your home. There are also many manufacturers of roofing products. We feel that no matter what manufacturer of roofing you decide on it is of strong importance to keep this in mind.
A 5 part Roofing System:
1.) A waterproofing shingle underlayment at the eaves, also known as ice and water shield.
MN State Building Code requires this material be installed 24 in. beyond the inside wall of the structure. We like to install this material at all critical flashing areas as recommended by the shingle manufacturer. Throughout valley areas, against roof to wall flashing areas, any low-sloped areas and around penetrations such as plumbing pipes, skylights, chimneys etc.
2.) A quality reinforced tarpaper or roofing felt.
There are a variety of underlayments for the application of new shingles on your home. We recommend the use of a fiberglass reinforced underlayment that will have the strength and durability of a 30# felt with the convenience and ease of application of a 15# felt. The fiberglass woven into the felt allows it to be pulled tight and reduce any wrinkling thus achieving a superior uderlayment to accept your new shingles.
3.) Quality Shingles.
Again, there is a wide variety of shingles to choose from. It is our recommendation to install at a minimum, a 30 yr. architectural shingle such as a Timberline by GAF, an Oakridge by Owens Corning or a Landmark by Certainteed.
4.) Effective Attic Ventilation.
Whether you have standard vents, turbine vents or ridge vents on your home, venting your attic is very important. Adequate attic ventilation will keep air moving through your attic space keeping it cool and dry. Moisture can lead to rot and heat can lead to premature deterioration of your shingles. MN State Building Code requires that 1 standard roof vent be installed for every 150 sq. ft. of attic space. If you have adequate eave ventilation, 1 standard roof vent should be installed for every 300 sq. ft. of attic space.
5.) Distinctive Ridge Cap Shingles.
Similar to the way a frame sets off a picture, an enhanced ridge cap shingle will add to the beauty of your ridge lines and also add superior protection.
